In the midfield this squad is stout with Xabi Alonso, and defenders like Carlos Puyols and Co. keep competitors away from the goal on defense. But captain and goalie Iker Casillas, probably the greatest goalie on earth, is maybe the biggest competitor on this side.

But talent aside, the Spanish side had a positive draw in the quarterfinals versus Paraguay and that may just have been the tiny bit of luck this squad required to get through.

It was a challenging game, full of bitter moments and debate, but Spain came out on top. Simply put, the teams were fairly evenly matched, but Spain just had a better evening than Paraguay.

When they face the much more challenging German squad, it is still to be viewed if Spain’s luck continues.
